I’ve learnt in my life to never say never.
I finished my photography career 20 years ago and I never thought that I would take a professional photograph ever again.
As the owner of a start-up I found myself in the position of having to make a decision around spending thousands of dollars on a photographer or dusting off my photography hat and doing it myself.
I decided to back myself. I decided to trust myself and I decided to be bold and shoot our first lookbook in Bali. I was over there finalising our first range with Kerry my designer who lives in Bali and we thought it would be a great opportunity because we were together, to take the photos there. I was really nervous and worried that I wasn’t going to be good enough or that I might fail. But I backed myself and I decided to do it anyway even though I was scared.
We looked at all of the models at the agencies in Bali and while they were all beautiful we decided for our first lookbook that we wanted to have real women, raw energetic real characters. Our first choice was Kerry and my mutual friend KT.
KT is amazingly strong woman who is very talented. She is an incredible jewellery designer, actually all of the jewellery in the shoot belongs to KT’s range. She’s also an amazing singer and songwriter and has also just started to teach Kirtan yoga. KT has an amazing body, she’s covered in tats and has a really strong face, and she had the energy of a Rockstar because she’s a Rockstar in her own right. That’s what we wanted to have emanating from the photos of our first lookbook shoot: Authentic energy!
It was two days before the shoot and we were yet to settle on our second model. We interviewed a few but none of them were right. None of them had the character we were after. We then interviewed somebody to take the make-up and hair job and in walked the most beautiful girl I had seen on the island and she had such a beautiful energy. Her name was Yessi and we asked her if she’d be interested in modelling in our campaign. Luckily she loved our vibe and said yes!
I was so nervous the night before the shoot I hardly slept. When I used to photograph it was all with film and now of course it’s all digital, so I was a little unsure of how I would go.
The Equipment we were using in Bali was actually very old and I have to say we had a lot of technical problems on the day of the shoot. It was a really bumpy start, as it took us about two hours just to sort out the lights. I thought there would be more lights organised for, but when I got there we only had two and that was not enough – I needed 3. By the time we got another light in it was already 11 o’clock and we only had the studio till five. So it was full steam ahead, no more time for nerves!
When I started to shoot it all came flooding back to me and it felt just like yesterday. I was really happy with the results. There is so much energy and attitude to the photos, they were exactly what we wanted – real women wearing our bags with real stories, real personalities, real body types and real looks.
That night I felt so proud of myself that I had backed myself! I felt like a Rockstar for following through on my vision, for backing myself and taking a gamble on betting on me rather than spending the money on choosing another photographer. I felt really proud that I had lived up to my own expectations.
I felt Like a Rockstar
In fact, we were all Rockstars that day. Kerry with all his energy and commitment, KT for all her attitude and grace and Yessi for never having modelled before and being brave enough to step out in front of the camera. And myself for backing myself, for following through and for lifting up my camera and shooting again when I never ever thought that I would.
Life has its own plan for all of us and mine is to clearly be taking photographs again and working with Kerry to create our brand for you.
Never say Never. Back yourself. Be scared but do it anyway.
Let me know when you have been scared and done it anyway! I’d love to hear from you xxx
